about

yes, friends, the world Has been set afire of late. as the prophet once sayeth: "strange days indeed!"

in march of 2020, the Secret Caves pressed the pause button on their plans for musical supremacy, a planned "brief hiatus" that then extended on as things got more and more.... you know. you were there. I saw you there.

we all scrambled down into our respective fallout shelters and assumed the position, peeking occasionally through the porthole to see that yes, madness was still lain across the land, its pall unmistakable.

BUT in august Carrie and Scott ventured back into the Room 8, turning on the lights and discovering that the guitars and instruments lay in piles, untended, lonely, ready... driven by the need to keep going, to try and make Something happen, C & S set the amps upright and plugged in, stomped on the fuzz pedal and embraced the infernal once more... and thus, masked and staring across the room at one another, they started making some noise.

so! what happened next? so glad you asked. see, between august 2020 and... well, yesterday, C & S have been keeping busy, working up music sketches and ideas down at the aforementioned room 8... some of the songs reflecting on the wolves at the door, the shifting winds of the maelstrom at hand.... others drifting into fantasy worlds full of monsters and sinister revelation (so maybe not Really so fantastical, innit), and then also the usual doom gloomy love affairs that one might expect from these two ne'er-do-wells. in these songs, yes, the suburbs Are aflame, the devil Is running loose in the garden, the children Are dancing in the graveyards and the world keeps spinning madcap delirium. in short, it's a place you know, a place where you belong.

using drum bits begged and borrowed from a few friends and allies (including, on several tracks, Cave member Peder!), and then playing some drums themselves along the way (the credo being "whatever gets it done"), Carrie and Scott found themselves with a growing arsenal of these demos... but then the question arose: what to do? here was a large stack of songs comprising bass guitar and vocals. fuzz tone riffs, merciless drum loops, and exclamatory yawps of the barbaric variety. but what Now? for awhile, C & S they did despair, they did. what shall we do with all this unfinished songs?

suddenly, there was a knock on the proverbial door. hark! various and sundry pals stepped up, instruments leaning over their shoulders as they came whistling down the lane, caught a bus at the crossroads, stumbled without apology through the kitchen window.... yes, a veritable rogue's gallery! 15 collaborators in fact, all of whom generously joined in and helped usher the songs to their final state. remotely adding keyboards, guitars, synth, lap steel, and yes, even saxophone (some might say Especially saxophone!, the assorted contributors shaped and transformed the tracks lain now before you. toward the end, a few brave souls (newly inoculated, all) stepped through the doors of Room 8 to help rattle the dishes anew with a handful of live(-ish) recordings!

and so here we are. and what's next? all is uncertain excepting for this: more music, friend. Always more music.

now please join us in offering up some special thanks and joyous hugs to the following:

thank you for the wonderful album cover images: these were created in collaboration with and photographed by Flatchestedmama. find more of her work at www.flatchestedmama.com. ... the image features their creation The Apocalypse Clown, a figure who traipses through one of these songs.

special thanks to Chad, our journeyman musician and confidante, who helped up muscle through a pile of unfnished songs in short order, dragging along not only the requested gee-tar but also mellotron, lap steel, piano, and always having an idea or seven handy!

to Hugh who was always generous with the beats and never flagged even when he opened his inbox to find, yes, ANOTHER email from scotty asking "say there, friend, um... got a beat?" Hugh really helped keep us afloat through the chilly months of autumn and winter, when we might else wise have surrendered.

and to our other fearless collaborators!

Nina57 who, when asked for a guitar solo, instead helped transform a tune into something special with a brilliant rhythm guitar track! soundcloud.com/nina57

Dark Number 9 for helping us find that 1987 Cure magic on a couple of particularly vexing tracks! soundcloud.com/user-685269889-45247780

Timbertoe for his dark choir tones and also making a video for Barbwire Garden! soundcloud.com/timbertoe

Rosenbua for laying down the sax and adding that special sparkle, and for almost hardly ever saying "no"! soundcloud.com/andy-rosenberg-1

Greg Connors and Scott Fragala for helping shape our raw seaside blues into an actual for real song! soundcloud.com/greg-connors

Simon for the delicious Psych guitar solos, helping add just a Touch of Secret Caves mojo to the proceedings!

Peder for creating some thundering drum tracks in his basement, you know, the ones that started us off on this journey! looking forward to getting back to Caves-ing with you, good sir.

Myrh for wedding much needing WOW to a song with her dead on singing, and always being encouraging and supercool! soundcloud.com/myrhyum

Flores for a couple of really inspiring slinky drumbeats and for putting up with our weirdness live and in person for some amazing recording in Room 8 (thanks for setting up the high hats, also)!

Hotdog for not only providing harmony Vox on a track but also being around to offer sage wisdom when necessary!

Slayanne for helping make the ravens dance not just now, but always.

David R for coming in right at the end and helping us get extra loud with it on three last minute tracks!

okay, hope you enjoy our demos and when you're done listening, maybe you shoud go make some demos of your own, eh? why wait til the Next time the world ends?
